Organize Your Polymer Clay Color Recipes with Notion

Do you struggle to keep track of your polymer clay color recipes? If you’re anything like me, the answer is probably a big “YES!” Keep reading to discover my method for keeping track of color recipes.

Whether you’re mixing colors for a special project or just having fun experimenting, keeping track of your custom recipes is key. But who has time to scribble notes (that somehow always get lost)? I sure didn’t—until now.

Enter Notion. If you’re not already familiar, Notion is a note-taking app with a serious upgrade. A couple of years ago, I started using it, and now, I’m a full-blown Notion nerd. It’s an all-in-one life organizer, and guess what? It’s *perfect* for managing polymer clay color recipes. From now on, no more losing those precious recipes, no more random scraps of paper—just pure, colorful magic, organized and at your fingertips.

Why You NEED a Polymer Clay Color Recipes System

Let’s be real: mixing colors is fun, but remembering how you did it? Not so much. Relying on memory is basically playing a game of roulette with your art—and who needs that stress?

Imagine you’re halfway through a project, and you need to recreate that perfect shade of turquoise. Good luck guessing the ratios! Or worse, what if you finally found *the* color that makes your heart sing, but you didn’t write it down? Cue the sad trombone.

A color recipe system keeps everything neat, tidy, and—most importantly—accurate. Whether you need to recreate a shade for a big project or you just want to keep your favorite go-to color handy, tracking your recipes is a game changer.

How the Polymer Clay Color Recipes Template Works

If you’ve ever used a meal planner, you’ll get the hang of this template in no time. In fact, the inspiration came from my own Notion meal planner setup! The template is made up of two connected databases: one for your clay inventory (the “ingredients”) and one for your color recipes (the “meals”). Clever, right?

Here’s how to get started:

1. Add your clay inventory to the database.

2. Start logging your color recipes. I like to record mine by weight in grams for easy replication, especially for larger batches. (Trust me, it makes life SO much easier!)

You can even add color images—whether you create them in Canva or snap a photo of your sample. Plus, you can view all your colors at once or break them down into color families. The Color Palette Planner is where the magic really happens: you can test out different combos with just a checkbox click, so when it’s time to mix, everything’s right there.

The template includes instructions to guide you through every step.

Let’s Talk Color Mixing

I’m going to assume you’ve dabbled in color theory before. Red, yellow, and blue? They’re your basic building blocks. But depending on the clay brand, mixing can be a little unpredictable. That’s why I like to stick with Fimo Professional for its reliable blendability.

If you’re new to mixing, don’t stress! There are tons of free and paid polymer clay color recipes out there—Pinterest is a goldmine. Or, you can grab pre-made recipes from vendors on Etsy (Crafts by Chris is my personal fave). But if you love experimenting like I do, go ahead and start playing! Just remember to write everything down in your fancy new template.

Quick Tips for Choosing Color Palettes

Pinterest is my go-to for color palette inspiration. Just search “color palette” and modify your search—try things like “moody” or “sunset” to narrow it down. Other great sources of inspiration? Fabric, art, and nature. Don’t forget to use tools like Adobe Color to pull palettes from your favorite photos!

Pro tip: Take a picture of your palette and convert it to black and white. You’ll easily spot if the contrast between colors is strong enough or if things are blending into one another.

Color Recipe Math (Without the Headache!)

Color recipes are typically measured in parts but what if you want to mix a larger amount of clay? Grab your kitchen scale and measure it out in grams! It’s faster and your hands won’t suffer from repeatedly pushing down on a cutter.

Let’s break down how to convert “parts” into grams for larger batches:

Example Recipe:

  • 4 parts white
  • 2.5 parts magenta
  • 2.25 parts turquoise
  • 0.25 parts yellow

Add the total parts:

4 + 2.5 + 2.25 + 0.25 = 9

Want to make 100 grams of this color? Divide 100 by 9 to figure out how many grams equal one part.

100 ÷ 9 = 11.111 (round to 12 for easier math)

Now, multiply each part by 12:

  • White: 4 x 12 = 48 grams
  • Magenta: 2.5 x 12 = 30 grams
  • Turquoise: 2.25 x 12 = 27 grams
  • Yellow: 0.25 x 12 = 3 grams

Just weigh it out, mix it up, and you’re ready to roll—literally!
